WE ATTENDED THE 30TH COREN ASSEMBLY

Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) holds the COREN Engineering Assembly as a yearly event for all Engineering Practitioners (i.e. Engineers, Technologists, Technicians and Craftsmen) and Engineering Firms where they meet and interact professionally, discuss technological innovations/advancement, problems of Engineering and ways to move the practice of the profession forward. It is therefore mandatory for all Engineering Practitioners, Engineering Firms and Stakeholders to attend.

The 30th COREN Engineering Assembly was organized and held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja from 8th-10th August 2022. The theme of the Assembly was “Domestication and Development of Codes, Standards and Regulations as a Panacea for Engineering Infrastructure Failures in Nigeria”.

The three-day event comprised a variety of activities including the Opening Ceremony, Plenary and Syndicate sessions, Engineering Family Forum, and Closing Ceremony. The Assembly was enriched with other equally important social activities that enhanced interaction among the participants. These included a Presidential Cocktail held on the first day and Dinner on the last day. Exhibitions were mounted by industrialists, manufacturers, service providers, consultants, etc.

Amana Consortium Ltd was represented at the event by 6 staff members consisting of 3 Engineers, 2 Architects, and 2 Technicians. The conference started and finished successfully.

Some observations from the conference include:

  • COREN together with the NSE is taking steps to encourage entrepreneurship among engineers nationwide.
  • There is harmonization between COREN and the NSE which means that membership with COREN equals automatic membership with the NSE, that is after submission of relevant documents and certificates via the NSE website.
  • The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) urged its members to pay their dues which amount to about three billion naira, yes ₦3,000,000,000.
  • There is nationwide instruction that no Engineering Corps Member should be posted to teach in any school as that does not align with the profession.
